   Big Game Hunting

NEWS FLASH:  New moose permits now available due to increase in quotas following official aerial population census.    Also moose permits available for new moose hunting area.

Grey River Lodge Ltd. operates four hunting lodges in the southwest corner of the island of Newfoundland, which are each accessed by helicopter.Cappomoose.JPG (43105 bytes)

The report is now in on another great hunting season for 2009.   Please check in at Hunt News for details of our guests latest hunting experience.

With the highest populations of moose in North America, woodland caribou and some of the largest black bears found anywhere, Newfoundland provides tremendous opportunity for big game hunters.  This, coupled with the remote locations of our hunting  lodges and the associated low wilderness hunting efforts, even further increases chances of bagging one of these prized trophies.  Those interested in bowhunting are very welcome, as are black powder hunters.  We also extend a special invitation to couples, including non-hunting spouses, who will find our modern accommodations very favourable.

Our hunting is highly controlled, with limited numbers of permits available for each big game species in order to at least maintain existing population levels. Overall success rates at our lodges for the past ten years have been over 80% for moose and virtually 100% for woodland caribou.  A very occasional and  incidental hunt for bear has  taken one or two per year, but they would usually be in the 400-500 pound range and the hunters involved would most likely have taken both moose and/or caribou on the same hunt as well.  In the likely event that a hunter fills his big game tags before the end of his hunt, wingshooting for Ptarmigan is available (complimentary to our big game hunters), with a pointing dog sometimes in camp for this purpose.  Our hunters are also permitted to shoot any coyotes at no extra charge.

Why Hunt?

Please check at Hunt News 2007, Hunt News 2006, Hunt News 2005 ,Hunt news 2004, Hunt news 2003 or at Hunt News 2002   for reports on those hunting seasons, as well as 2005 Hunt Photos,  2004 Hunt Photos, 2003 Hunt Trophies  or 2002 caribou racks to see some of the trophies .

In order to better ensure high rates of hunter success, as well as maintain a more relaxed and personal atmosphere in camp, we have a policy to keep hunting parties small in size, usually at four or less.  Non-hunting companions are also welcome at reduced rates and with our very comfortable modern facilities, we are attracting more and more couples each year, some being hunters and some not .   Unless specially arranged, ours is a one on one guide hunter ratio.   We pride ourselves on having a knowledgeable, hard working and co-operative staff of guides and cooks, which includes both business owners, who are active guides.  As a result, in most cases, the individuals with whom you negotiated your hunt are right there in the lodge with you, and in many cases, directly involved with your hunt in the field.  Your hunting experience is our also our experience.    You can take it for granted then that the cook will be a good one.

Our standard package is for one week, with Sunday designated as a travel day because hunting is DCP_0561.JPG (316575 bytes)illegal on Sunday.   For fall hunting operations, the closest NL air terminal is Deer Lake, as outlined on the map, and our rates provide for return ground transportation to the helicopter base.   All lodges have meat storage facilities with refrigeration available if required, in order to ensure proper meat care.  Meat, antler and hide care is a top priority and involves hanging the meat for aging, packaging it for the return trip, caping of all trophies, as well as preserving the hides for taxidermy.   We accept both rifle and bow hunters, with a special two week bowhunting season directly preceding the regular opening date of the second Saturday in September.  Our hunts are then offered through to the middle of October.

Our continued extremely high level of guest satisfaction in our level of service has given our staff tremendous pride in their accomplishments.
