Best Success Ever For Moose at Grey River Lodge in 2011
Following such a great hunting season in 2010 at our lodges,
we would not have predicted that the next hunting season could possibly have
been any better. But 2011 certainly did provide a continuation in the trend
toward even better moose hunting results at our wilderness lodges. Even our best
expectations were exceeded.
While moose sightings remained excellent at all our lodges, it was the quality of trophy animals taken that was so impressive. All moose harvested were bulls, with every one having palmated antlers, the largest of which had a 51 inch spread. Moose hunt success would have included 4 of 6 archery hunters taking a moose, with the other 2 being our only unsuccessful hunters for the fall, even though both did see moose during a hunting week which was heavily impacted by poor weather.
While caribou hunting remained at a very low level, there was
no problem in harvesting good mature males at our Rocky Ridge Lodge, which is
the only of our lodges where we can still hunt the woodland caribou. Caribou
sightings at our other lodges was also on a par with the previous year. While
there was some positive news this
year
with high calf survival, there is no reason to believe that caribou licence
allocations are to increase any time soon.
Black bear activity was once again very good at both our Salmon Brook Lodge and Caribou Lodge, but only 1 animal was harvested, so population is almost assured to remain good for 2012.
The great 2011 hunting success was despite what most would call our very worst weather ever for hunting, with a higher than normal percentage of days with drizzle, fog and wind, as well as the remnants of a couple of hurricanes.
2011 also provided a continuation of the hosting of
husband/wife couples at our lodges, with such couples at all our lodges once
again this past fall.
New for 2011 was the production of a TV show at our Caribou Lodge for the Woods N’ Waters program with host Peter Feduccia. This series airs on the Sportsman Channel and WILDTV. The Grey River Lodge episode will be Sunday, November 20th at 3:30 pm EST on the Sportsman Channel and the main airing date for WILDTV will be Saturday the 19th at 6:30 pm EST. The Woods N' Water TV Series airs this October through December on the Sportsman Channel every Sunday (3:30 PM EST), Monday (12:00 AM and 10:00 AM EST); and throughout Canada on WILDTV every Saturday (6:30 pm EST), Friday (12:30 pm EST) and Wednesday (6:30 am EST).
Following such great hunting the past 2 years, bookings for 2012 are higher than normal for this point in time, and we are already over half full. All caribou hunts are sold, and while we do have moose hunts remaining, because of our restriction on the number of hunters per lodge, an early reservation is required in order to lock up some of the limited

will be continuing our lower priced rate schedule for 2012, with the inclusion
of a trophy fee due only when the hunt has become successful.
space for next year. There is also option to add bear hunting to moose at 2 of our lodges, as well as great opportunity for anyone interested in doing our spot and stalk hunt for black bear alone.
