                          Take a Hike

While all four of our lodges are located in wilderness settings, offering excellent opportunity to view the pristine landscape right from the lodges themselves, many people have a built-in need to see what lies in store on the other side of the ridge.  Margie-Karen-hike.jpg (327123 bytes) For the adventurer at heart, the eye opening helicopter ride to the lodge triggers this desire to explore and see it up close.

Both our lodges at Grey River, being situated in a deep river valley with steep hills rising 1000 feet above the river, provide the hiker, first with somewhat of a challenge to conquer these heights, and then with his reward of spectacular scenery.   An unlimited expanse of pristine countryside then opens up, with rolling hills that offer hidden surprises as each ridge is achieved.   Click to see Local Wildlife, Grey River Wildflowers, or other Local Sights

With two lodges situated on this river system only seven miles apart, hiking from one to the other provides the ideal situation.    While seven miles seems like a relatively short distance, this trek will take a very fit person between 4 and 5 hours of continuous walking to complete. Excellent opportunity for combination hiking and fishing excursions also exist.

Rocky Ridge Lodge offers the luxury of travel by boat on a large lake, and2nd falls.jpg (317527 bytes) then an additional bonus of much less demanding hiking due to the absence of steep hills as well as the presence of some unbelievable caribou trails which greatly  assist the explorer.  The easier traveling does not take anything from the scenery, however, as gentle rolling hills still provide many points of vantage, where, as aptly put by one of our staff, "you can see for days".   Access to a nearby river system also gives the option of penetrating even more of this wilderness by canoe from the lodge.

Healthy populations of moose, woodland caribou, black bear, bald eagles, ptarmigan, fox, as well as others inhabit this terrain, and the hiker is afforded vastly increased chances of viewing some of these creatures in their wilderness environment.  Binoculars and a camera are both essentials, which one does not wish to be caught without.

Our newest lodge, Caribou Lodge offers a 10 km hike-in option from a wilderness access road, which is moderately challenging.  Hiking is then unlimited from a comfortable full-service lodge.  Some canoeing is also possible on a river system just a moderate 1 1/2 - 2 hour hike from the lodge.
